Talking

These activities help a child develop an “ear” for the spoken language as one vocalizes a variety of sounds. Surrounded with oral talk, while actively engaged in a wide variety of activities, sets the very early foundational building block for reading & writing.

Early Literacy Foundational Skills

  • Oral Communication

    • listen and understand that verbal interactions is one method of communicating thoughts, ideas, whats, needs, etc.

  • Sentence Meaning

    • listen and understand meaning of a sentence

  • Word Meaning

    • listen and understand meaning of a specific word

SPEECH MILESTONES

Young children up to the age of 3 are developing the following sounds:

By the age of 5, young children are developing these additional sounds:

/k/ /g/ /f/ /s/ /y/ /w/

/j/ /z/ /l/ /v/

Blends and Digraphs:

General Plan (ages 3-7)

Discover, Play, & Explore the World of Sounds

GOAL: Daily face-to-face interactions through a wide variety of activities are the KEY.

MATERIALS:

Weekly, select ONE to TWO alphabet letter SOUNDS to focus on. The alphabet letter sounds will be referred to as the Focus Sounds.

For each individual Focus Sound, select five (5) pictures (KEY - each picture begins with the Focus Sound)

OPTIONAL MATERIALS:

*INDEX CARDS: each individual Focus Sound picture may be glued or drawn onto individual index cards. Hole punch each index card and keep together with a 1” ring.

*8.5” x 11” PAPER: each individual Focus Sound picture may be glued or drawn onto individual sheets of paper. Hole punch each paper and keep together with a 3-Ring Binder.

Picture One EX: a picture of a cat

Say the sound of the beginning letter.

EX: /c/ /c/ /c/. This is a ‘cat’.

Have the child repeat the beginning letter sound.

EX: /c/ /c/ /c/

STEP 2 of 3
