The Five Elements of Writing

01 - Purpose

What it Is: When an author writes, there needs to be a main purpose or intent of the writing. The author needs to ask, “What is their main goal of the written text”. Three common purposes for a piece of written work include to inform, to persuade, or to entertain.

02 — Audience

What it Is: The audience are the readers of the written work. Keeping the audience in mind as one writes, helps maintain the purpose of the writing, and the interest of the reader.

03 - Clarity

What it Is: When the written ideas are clear and understandable to the reader, the written text has clarity. Two tips for clarity is are to use descriptive or precise words, and have clear pronoun references.

Why it Matters: Clarity allows the reader to easily understand the author’s message.

04 - Unity

What it Is: Unity is when the ideas in a paragraph relate to the topic sentence and its main theme. Supporting sentences in a paragraph should all correlate with the topic sentence.

Why it Matters:

05 - Coherence

What it Is: When the written word flows smoothly from one idea to another idea in a logical and sequential order, the written text is coherent.

Why it Matters: This element allows a reader to follow the main idea more easily.
