Stages of Readers

  • Emergent Readers (6 Months to 5 Years)

    Emergent Readers typically range from 6 months to 5 years old.

    Over this period of growth, children will discover, play, and explore the word of literacy through daily interactions surrounded in oral communication.

    Emergent Readers work on two specific skills: (1) the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in the spoken language (Phonemic Awareness) and (2) the ability to connect the sound to the written symbol (Phonics).

  • Novice Readers (5 to 7 Years)

    Novice Readers typically range from 5 to 7 years old.

    Over this period of time, novice readers build upon their earlier interactions in literacy. The greater exposure and interactions, the stronger the literacy foundation.

    Novice Readers continue to build up their phonics ability, as they increase their foundation for fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.

  • Decoding Readers (7 to 9 Years)

    Decoding Readers typically range from 7 to 9 years old.

    Decoding Readers continue to strengthen and build upon their foundation for fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.

  • Fluent & Comprehending Readers (9 to 15 Years)

    Fluent & Comprehending Readers typically range from 9 to 15 years old.

    Fluent & Comprehending Readers continue to strengthen and build upon their foundation for fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.

  • Expert Readers (15+ Years)

    Expert Readers typically are 15+ years old.

    Expert Readers continue to strengthen and build upon their foundation for fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.
