EXIT SLIPS: After

Non-fiction reading strategies differ from Fictional reading strategies. Non-fiction text is designed to offer factual information on real events.

AFTER reading a non-fiction text, have the child(ren) complete an EXIT SLIP. The EXIT SLIP may be a quick activity to aid in comprehension, as the brain reflects and interacts to the written word. Non-fiction text is designed with elements not found in Fiction. Exit Slip ideas:

  • For Each Main Heading

    • Name the main idea and three (3) supporting details. Make sure these are facts not opinions.

  • Organization of Text

    • How did the author organize this written text? Chronological order, or compare and contrast two ideas?

  • Personal Connections

    • What connections can be made from this written text and other texts you have read?

    • What connections can be made from this written text to your personal life?
