Fluency Building: Re-read & Monitor (Key #2)

Re-read & Monitor Aloud

Re-reading the same text aloud, improves reading fluency and overall reading development.

Monitoring what a child reads is also beneficial. Having a fluent reader, listen to a child read aloud, and give feedback will enhance the rereading experience.

The first step is for the child to hear what the text sounds like when read fluently. Once the text has been modeled, then have the child(ren) re-read it. Usually, having a child(ren) read a text four times is sufficient to improve fluency.

GOALS of Re-reading and Monitoring

Model Accuracy: Through the use of the the fluent reader, accuracy of the text is modeled. Re-reading offers practice & re-emphasizes of accuracy.

Model Fluid Pace: Through the use of the the fluent reader, fluid pace of the text is modeled. Re-reading offers practice & re-emphasizes of fluid pace.

Model Expression: Through the use of the the fluent reader, expression of the text is modeled. Re-reading offers practice & re-emphasizes of expression.
