Level 3: Sound Relay
Sequence of Sound: Connections to Print
Level 3 Activities focus on the sequence of sounds in a word. Attention is directed to specific positions of sounds within a word. This is the foundational base for segmenting sounds independently. When recognition of beginning, ending, and middle sounds is acquired, emergent readers are better equipped to isolate sounds and hear them separately.
Early Literacy Foundational Skills
Sounds (Phonemes) Isolation

listen & detect individual sounds at the ending of a word
listen & detect individual sounds in the middle of a word
Sound Relay
GOAL: sound (phoneme) isolation & matching sounds (phonemes) to letters
Materials:
bag of plastic letters (consonants)
small objects (two for each consonant sound in the bag)
Directions for New Players:
Place the small objects at one end of the table.
Have the child(ren) say the name of each object.
Have one child at a time, select one letter from the bag and say the name of the letter AND the sound the letter makes.
EX: Child selects the letter B from the bag. The child says, “B”, then the sound the letter B makes, “/b/”.
Now have the child place the selected letter on top of or next to the small object that BEGINS with the corresponding sound.
EX: Child places the letter B next to the baseball.
Repeat steps #3 and #4 with a new selected letter.
If more than one child plays, have the children take turns.
Directions for Established Players:
Materials:
bag of plastic letters (consonants)

Directions for Established Players:
Follow the Directions for New Players, focusing on the ending sounds.
CHALLENGE:
Follow the Directions for New Players, focusing on vowel sounds. Remember to place the vowel letters in the bag along with the consonant letters
HELPFUL TIPS:
Always model first until the child is comfortable with this activity.
Caution if using small objects that begin or end with consonant digraphs (EX: ch, sh, th). IDEA: have cards with consonant digraphs written on.
Caution if using vowel digraphs (EX: ai, ea, ee) IDEA: have cards with vowel digraphs written on.
