ASK QUESTIONS: During

Non-fiction reading strategies differ from Fictional reading strategies. Non-fiction text is designed to offer factual information on real events.

DURING reading non-fiction text, have the child(ren) stop after a pre-determined amount of reading, and ask a question or two. Then proceed with more of the reading. The stopping and asking questions with the text, aides in comprehension allowing the brain to “digest” what has been read, to interact with the written word, and to build personal connections, all to enhance the reader’s understanding. Non-fiction text is designed with elements not found in Fiction. Ask a few of the following questions:

  • Headings & Sub-Headings

    • How do the headings and sub-headings help the reader understand?

  • Table of Contents, Glossary, & Index

    • How do the table of contents, glossary, and index help the reader understand?

  • Graphs, Charts, Photographs, & Illustrations

    • How do the graphs, charts, photographs, illustrations, and other visuals help support the text?

  • Main Ideas

    • Name the main idea and three (3) supporting details.
