Fluency Building: Child & Adult

Child & Adult Reading

With child-adult reading, the child reads one-on-one with an adult or fluent reader. The adult or fluent reader can be you, a parent, a grandparent, an older sibling or cousin, or a tutor. The key is that the adult reader is a fluent reader.

The adult or fluent reader reads the text first, providing the child with a model of fluent reading. Then the child reads the same passage to the adult with the adult providing assistance and encouragement. The child re-reads the passage until the reading is quite fluent. This should take approximately three to four re-readings.

GOALS of Adult & Child Reading

Model Accuracy: Through the use of the the fluent reader, accuracy of the text is modeled.

Model Fluid Pace: Through the use of the the fluent reader, fluid pace of the text is modeled.

Model Expression:Through the use of the the fluent reader, expression of the text is modeled.
